Most people have a bad habit of using their smart phones before going to bed at night. It is nothing serious if you just make a quick check on your friends, your favorite game, or the tomorrow’s weather. But you should know that if you spent a long period of time on your phone at night it is not good for your health.
In other words, the radiation of cell phones is considered as a common problem by a lot of people. However, certain serious health conditions can be caused by the “blue light” of smart phones.
Furthermore, all of us are exposed by the blue light of the sun each day, because it is a part of the full light spectrum. On the other hand, smart phones, laptops, tablets, and every other LED screens emit this light that can be so harmful for your vision if you are exposed to it during the night. This light is also able to decrease the melatonin production, a hormone that regulates your sleeping.
3 problems caused by the usage of smart phones during the night:
1. Sleep loss
The melatonin production is disrupted by “blue light” of smart phones. In addition, the main function of this hormone is to regulate the body’s sleeping cycle. Therefore, if it doesn’t function properly, you will suffer from a lack of sleep. Additionally, this can lead to various health issues.
Some of them are the following:
- Aged skin
- Weight gain
- Lack of memory
- Slower response time
- Heart disease and many other cardiovascular issues
2. Eye damage
You should know that a nighttime “blue light” exposure is able to cause the retina and macular degeneration damage. In addition, the macular degeneration is the central vision loss or the ability to see what is right in front of you.
Moreover, the blue light exposure can even lead to cataract development. One doctor revealed that he has diagnosed a 35-year-old man with cloudy eyes with developed cataract, which can be compared to eyes of 75-year-old man. According to this doctor, the overuse of smart phones is not the main reason for the cataract and he also suggested that additional researches should be conducted.
3. Increased cancer risk
It is a shocking fact that increased light at night can lead to sleep issues. In addition, it can result in an increased cancer risk, particularly the prostate as well as breast cancer. On the other hand, the melatonin hormone can act as an antioxidant and if its production is disrupted by the blue light it can lead to an increased risk of cancer.
So only a one-time disruption cannot be considered as a serious problem. However, many people have a bad habit of using their smart phones for hours each night before going to bed. It is recommended to avoid this light at night in order to prevent the above mentioned health problems.
