Sciatica is a term used to describe the pain that affects the back, hip, and outer side of the leg. In fact, it is triggered when the sciatic nerve is compressed or irritated. Most often, it is followed by numbness and a tingling sensation and it is usually the reason why you stay in bed and take some painkillers.
To be more concrete, sciatic nerve is actually the largest nerve in the human body, which runs down each leg from the lower spine all the way to the feet. In addition, it provides movement, sensation, as well as strength to each leg.
The most commonly experienced sciatica symptoms are sharp painful sensations and cramping. Usually, these symptoms are accompanied with tingling sensations and numbness in various areas of the buttock, leg or foot. Sciatica generally occurs on one side or another, not in both legs simultaneously.
It is frequently triggered by a herniated or slipped disc. But, it can also occur due to spinal injury or infection, spinal stenosis, disease of degenerative disc, isthmic spondylolisthesis, piriformis syndrome, and pregnancy.

Natural homemade remedies to treat sciatica
- Hot or cold compresses
They can effectively lower sciatica pain and inflammation. Namely, heat treatment is able to relieve sciatica pain and decrease inflammation. Also, it relaxes the muscles that may be compressing the sciatic nerve. Whereas, the cold treatment lowers swelling around the nerve and alleviates the pain. Moreover, you can freely alternate heat and cold, beginning with the hot compress and ending by using the cold compress. But, use steamed towel in the hot treatment. You should place the hot or cold pack on the affected area for about 15-20 minutes. Until you get relief it is recommended to repeat the procedure every few hours.
Willow bark is actually beneficial for treating long-lasting pain. To explain you more deeply, it abounds in phenolic glycosides with allicin, providing anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects.
Just add 50 grams of bark in 1 liter of water and then leave it overnight. The next morning, boil it for about 15 minutes and leave it cool. At least, pour it in a glass container and drink 3 cups of it every day.
It is excellent for treating sciatica as a result of its strong anti-inflammatory effects. Additionally, curcumin found in turmeric has a capacity to reduce nerve pain and inflammation, too. The only thing you need to do is to add 1 teaspoon of turmeric in 1 cup of milk. You can also add a small cinnamon stick and boil the mixture. By using honey you can sweeten it and consume once or twice a day until the pain disappears.
Note: Those taking blood thinners or diabetes drugs should avoid using turmeric. It is also not recommended for people who have gallstones.
