Here is how to prepare the water:
- First of all, chill one liter bottle of unflavored seltzer that is fully carbonated water. Make sure that the seltzer only contains water and carbon dioxide. Also, club soda is carbonated water with a small amount of added sodium will be suitable.
- Afterwards, shake the bottle of Milk of Magnesia well, and measure out 3 tablespoons or 45 ml. For example, the plastic measuring cup that comes with the MoM is accurate and perfect for this.
- Next, be careful to remove the bottle of unflavored seltzer from the refrigerator without agitating it. In addition, just open it slowly and carefully in order to minimize the loss of CO2. Once the initial fizzing settles down, you should slowly add the pre-measured MoM. Quickly replace the cap on the water bottle and shake it vigorously for about 30 seconds, making the liquid cloudy.
- After about half an hour, the liquid will have cleared, and any un-dissolved magnesium hydroxide will have settled to the bottom of the bottle. Once again shake the bottle vigorously for about 30 seconds, making the liquid cloudy again. Moreover, when the liquid again clears all of the magnesium hydroxide found in the MoM should have reacted with all of the CO2 to become dissolved, i.e., ionized, magnesium and bicarbonate.
- This 1 liter of concentrated magnesium bicarbonate water will have around 1500 mg of magnesium as well as around 7500 mg of bicarbonate.
- Keep it in a refrigerator. You may note that when the liquid clears the sides of the bottle cave in, which is an indicator that the reaction is complete.
Note: A perfect serving size for magnesium is 200 mg a day, or about half a cup, i.e., 125mL of this recipe. But, of course, you can increase the serving size up to 1 full cup or 250m). However, bear in mind that taking more than 1 cup may end up resulting in loose stools.
