For many people, sitting for most of the working day feels unavoidable. Work is completed at a computer, meetings take place online, lunch is eaten at a desk, and the evening may involve more sitting while driving, watching television or using a phone.
The body is capable of sitting comfortably, and sitting itself is not inherently harmful. Problems are more likely to arise when sitting becomes prolonged, highly repetitive and largely uninterrupted.
Spending eight hours at a desk does not guarantee back pain or poor health. However, understanding what happens during long periods of inactivity can help you make practical changes before stiffness and discomfort become part of the daily routine.
Your Muscles Keep Working Even When You Are Still
Sitting may look passive, but muscles continue to work to support the head, spine and upper body. When you remain in one position, the same tissues may be asked to perform low-level work for an extended period.
This can lead to fatigue rather than the type of muscle soreness associated with exercise. The muscles around the neck, shoulders and lower back may begin to feel tight, heavy or sensitive.
Workstation design can influence where this demand is felt. A monitor positioned too far away may encourage the head to move forwards. A keyboard placed too high may cause the shoulders to remain slightly elevated. Limited back support may make it harder to change between comfortable seated positions.
There is no universally correct sitting posture, however. The US Occupational Safety and Health Administration notes that no single workstation arrangement will suit everyone. A useful setup supports neutral, comfortable positions while still allowing the person to move and adjust throughout the day.
Your Hips and Knees Remain in Bent Positions
When sitting, the hips and knees usually remain flexed. This is not dangerous, but staying in the position for hours can make the first few steps after standing feel stiff.
Some muscles around the hips spend much of the day in a shortened position, while others are relatively inactive compared with when you are walking, climbing stairs or standing. This does not mean the muscles permanently shorten during a single working day. It does mean they receive limited movement variety.

Healthy people may simply notice temporary swelling, heaviness or marks from their socks after a long day. Standing and walking usually help restore normal movement and circulation.
Long periods of immobility can be more concerning for people who already have risk factors for blood clots. Sudden swelling, warmth or pain in one leg—particularly when combined with shortness of breath or chest pain—requires urgent medical attention.
For routine desk work, regularly moving the ankles, standing and taking short walks can help avoid very long periods of complete lower-body inactivity.
Energy Expenditure Falls
Sedentary behaviour involves low energy expenditure while sitting, reclining or lying down while awake. During a desk-based working day, the large muscles of the legs and trunk are considerably less active than they would be during walking or physical work.
Over time, high levels of sedentary behaviour are associated with increased risks of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and premature mortality. The World Health Organization therefore recommends limiting sedentary time and replacing it with physical activity where possible.
These long-term associations do not mean that one eight-hour day at a desk causes disease. They reflect repeated patterns over months and years, often combined with insufficient physical activity and other health factors.
Regular exercise is important, but it does not make movement during the rest of the day irrelevant. Someone can complete a morning workout and still spend the following ten hours almost completely inactive.
Concentration and Energy Can Change
Sitting for long stretches can also affect how alert a person feels. The afternoon slump is not always caused by posture, but limited movement, visual fatigue, monotonous tasks and insufficient breaks can all contribute.
Short activity breaks may help by changing the visual environment, increasing movement and creating a mental pause. A brisk walk is not always possible, but even standing during a phone call or walking to refill a water bottle can interrupt a long period of stillness.
A randomised trial involving office workers found that promoting active breaks and postural shifts reduced the development of new neck and lower-back pain among participants at high risk. The important feature was not a complex exercise programme, but regularly interrupting static behaviour.
How Often Should You Move?
There is no universal rule that everyone must stand at an exact interval. Work demands, physical ability and existing health conditions differ.
A practical target is to avoid letting several hours pass without changing position. Some people use a reminder every 30 to 60 minutes, while others link movement to routine activities such as finishing a meeting, sending a report or making a drink.
A movement break could involve:
- Standing for a telephone call
- Walking to speak to a colleague
- Refilling a glass of water
- Performing several comfortable shoulder movements
- Walking for a few minutes at lunchtime
- Alternating between seated and standing tasks
- Moving the ankles and legs during a meeting
- Changing to a different supported sitting position
These actions do not need to become a demanding workout. Their purpose is to introduce variety.
A Standing Desk Is Not a Complete Solution
Standing desks can make it easier to change position, but standing continuously can also become uncomfortable. The goal is not to replace eight hours of sitting with eight hours of standing.
Alternating between sitting, standing and walking is usually more practical. When standing, the screen, keyboard and work surface still need to be arranged comfortably. Wearing supportive footwear and shifting weight periodically may also help.
The most useful workstation is one that allows adjustment rather than locking the body into a single idealised posture.
When Discomfort Needs Assessment
Mild stiffness that settles after walking or changing position is common. Professional assessment may be appropriate when pain is persistent, progressively worsening or interfering with sleep and normal activities.
Symptoms such as numbness, significant weakness, loss of coordination, unexplained fever, major trauma or changes in bladder or bowel control require timely medical assessment.

The solution is not to fear sitting or search for one perfect posture. Sitting is a normal human activity. The more useful approach is to prevent it from becoming the only position you use throughout the day.
A supportive workstation, regular physical activity and frequent changes of position can make desk-based work considerably more comfortable. Rather than asking whether your posture is perfect, ask how long it has been since you last moved.
